Pros:
Controls the pocket, doesn't over under.
Best Uses:
House shot for me.
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Raised my average by 30 pins since December.
I was struggling with my Top Thrill and my Motive Pride and using my Storm Mix to hit the pocket but had to play straight up the 10 board with no room to miss right. The pitch black allowed me to stand further left and use the second arrow and gave me some hold if I missed left and came back if I missed right. I'm a low speed low rev senior bowler. My last night of league, I had a 234,202, 247 for a 683 series the high for the night. So I would say I love this ball it made me love to bowl again. Buy this ball!

Great Ball
I’m a two hander and already own a reactive ball, and decided to try my hand at a urethane ball. I was surprised to see how fast I was able to adjust and find this ball’s perfect line, and how consistently I was able to hit it. Definitely recommend.

Amazing ball
this ball was a great choice for me. after a year of bowling i bought my first pitch black for tournaments, messy league shots etc and it was great. so controllable. and it has got me out of many tough spots. After my second year of bowling i now average 188 and this ball definitely filled a hole for me
By Average150Robbo from Hong Kong

Dry Lanes, Any critical lane oil patterns

MUST - HAVE STORM BALL
The Pitch Black is a great urethane ball from Storm and I am super grateful it isn’t discontinued, as a two handed bowler, I require a ball that has great continuation and massive hooks, although this ball has a slightly weaker hook compared to let’s say, purple hammer. It can also be used as a great spare ball for those that can shoot spares with urethane, overall, outstanding ball from Storm, highly recommended for people just starting out to bowl!
By Bill from Albuquerque, New Mexico

Very predictable ball.
Storms Black Pitch bowling ball is outstanding. I have used it for two weeks and my average has risen every week. The black pitch is a very predictable ball when it is released. When I hit my mark on the lanes, the ball rolls smoothly and breaks to the pocket for strikes. Picking up spares and marking is very easy. I have the Black Pitch Urethane ball, and a Storm Reactive ball which is a fantastic. Comparing them head to head Urethane ball in my opinion is easier to control picking up spares and attacking the pocket for strikes.

Great ball.
This is a very good ball for shorter oil patterns. It’s an extremely versatile ball too, I’m able to use it as both a strike ball and a spare ball depending on the lane conditions. This is probably my new favorite bowling ball!

So far so good
Bought this for my daughter about a week ago. She has used it a couple times so far, but the oil pattern that was down wasn’t really for this ball. It’s definitely performing like it should.

NOT FOR SOMEONE WITH LITTLE REVS
For anyone who knows how to bowl. This ball is great. This ball is not going to hook a mile by any means this ball is not for someone who gets very little revs it is for someone who knows how to control the ball on a short oil pattern. I've seen my friends bowl consistently in the 220s with this ball. My other friend bowled a perfect game with this ball.

Better than I expected.
Works well on very little oil. My high performance ball designed for oily lanes was not working well and finished up with this ball on lanes with a lot of oil and I was impressed. If I got near the headpin--the ball blew them out. Even got strikes by hitting direct on head pin. Very pleased--only regrets are that I did not get a 14 lb ball and that the first time it was drilled that it was done wrong. As it is I am dong well with a redrilled ball. Also I don't have a lot of rev but I cant complain with this ball.

The Best Choice I have ever made
This ball was perfect for my 35 foot sport pattern. I was only averaging 175 with my Brunswick Rhino gold pro but as soon as this ball came in I move my lone two boards in and the last 3 weeks I haven't shot under a 200! Also great for house oil. It's extremely constant if you are.

Great Ball! Fits great in my arsenal
I am a two handed bowler with a 215 average and I had issues adapting to my sport shot leagues lane conditions, but no more. The Storm Pitch Black rolls like a monster. I had it drilled pin up to the right of center with the CG kicked out about an inch to give some added length to a ball that is known to hook early. I then sanded it to 1000 grit so it could still bite and wouldn't go too long. I would recommend this ball to anyone who needed a versatile ball that could be a combo for a spare and Strike ball.

Excellent choice for certain conditions
I purchased this ball as an upgrade to my old (20 years) Columbia 300 Shadow. It is a definite improvement over my older ball. While it is stronger than my Shadow it finishes MUCH better which is what I was looking for in this ball. I no longer leave 5-7's or just 5's on a worn out THS. It can cover more boards at times, but it is just as smooth and controllable as my Shadow.

not meant for everybody not a ball you want to used on a house shot unless it for 10 pins but if you are a tournament bowler and come across 35ft and especially 32ft patterns this ball is a nice option when you cant find the pocket its a urethane bowl want did you expect only meant for short patterns

NOT A GOOD BALL IF YOU KNOW HOW TO BOWL
THE PITCH BLACK SHOULD BE LISTED FOR STARTING BOWLERS. MY AVERAGE HAS DROPPED 20 POINTS SINCE I STARTED USING THIS BALL. IT WAS A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME. I HAD PROFESSIONAL HELP USING IT AND THEY TOLD ME TO GET ANOTHER BALL.I HAD THE BALL SANDED AND IT STILL DOES NOT HIT WELL. I WILL DONATE IT TO THE SCHOOL LEAGUE.

Question:
So this ball is more compareable to the blue hammer ?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
Hello Joe! The Blue Hammer will have a 2000 grit finish and it is also a pearl coverstock. The Pitch Black is a solid coverstock with a 1000 grit finish. It will have a difference performance to the Blue Hammer

Can this ball be used to complement the black hammer. If not what ball complements this ball well
Have an answer to this question?
Question:
On heavy oil could the pitch black be used as a reliable spare ball?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
This ball is a urethane ball and is not a spare ball. It will not bowl straight, it will have a hook to it. If you need something to bowl straight, we recommend looking into our spare balls.

Question:
If I don’t need any drilling for the ball I just choose no protection for drilling??
Have an answer to this question?
Question:
Could you compare this ball to the Hustle ink. With the pin above fingers.
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
The difference is that the Hustle Ink is a Solid reactive and the Storm Pitch Black is a solid urethane. The Hustle Ink will have a 1500 grit finish and the Storm Pitch Black will only have 1000 grit finish, meaning the Hustle Ink will go longer down the lanes before breaking.

Question:
How does this ball compare to the old red pearl hammer
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
I do not have a lot of details for the older equipment but this ball has a urethane coverstock which is much more tame on hook potential when compared to the reactive coverstocks. This ball will have a nice smooth hook on lighter oil conditions with a very readable reaction.

Question:
Looking on the specs, how am I able to tell if this ball hooks a lot or doesnt have much hook. I would like to know by looking at the specs because I would like to buy multiple ball but would like to figure out the hooking for each ball before buying.
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
There are a couple of things to look at which will help you determine how strong the ball hooks. First you can check the performance level. Usually the higher the performance, the more the ball hooks. Second you also want to check the lane conditions the ball is rated for. If the ball is rated to handle more oil then it will be a stronger hooking ball. If the ball is rated for lighter oil then it will not be very strong in most cases. That will usually get you in the right direction using those two options but I do want to point out one more thing. Urethane coverstocks are not going to hook as much as reactive coverstocks so if you have checked the first two options and then see it was a urethane cover then that ball will be less hook than a similar ball in the same categories that has a reactive cover. I hope this helps but feel free to call us if you have any further questions.

Question:
I need a ball that works well in tournaments after the lanes have broken down. My chronic paranoia is still too strong as a two hander. Is this a good weaker option?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
This is going to be a significant drop down from the Chronic Paranoia which was rated as a higher performance ball for medium lanes. First, this was a urethane cover which is weaker than almost every reactive ball that is made including some of the entry performance reactive bowling balls. So dropping from a high performance ball to a mid performance ball would normally be a good drop but dropping to a urethane mid performance is a significant drop and you may even need something in between. There are some medium performance balls designed for medium to lighter oil that have a reactive cover and that could also be a good option to check into as a drop from the Chronic Paranoia.

Question:
What is the average time for the ball to get delivered?
Have an answer to this question?
Question:
I am a straight bowler and have a Hustler 3tp in which I hook on dryer lanes. I have a pitch black ready for drilling and am wondering if this will give me a starighter ball on dryer lanes. I throw at about 14.5 to 15 mph. what will be the difference in pin action between the 2 balls.
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
The urethane will be weaker than reactive so it should be a straight overall shot compared to the Hustle 3TP. If the ball comes into the pocket straighter with less entry angle then it will not drive as well through the pins so you will get less pin action throwing straighter.

Question:
I am a full roller is this ball a good ball for me? I already have astro physix, phaze3, gravity evolve
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
This could be used for a full roller but you would have to make sure your driller puts a full roller drilling layout on the ball. Also, this would be much weaker than the other balls you have because this was a urethane ball. So if you needed a good ball for lighter oil or drier conditions then this would be a good option for those conditions.

Question:
How would u compare this ball to the Roto Grip Hot Cell
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
The Roto Grip Hot Cell will have a more advanced weight block so this will make it a little stronger than the Pitch Black Solid Urethane. They have similar length though due to the same finish out of the box.

Question:
how would this compare to the covert tank ?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
They are going to have a very similar overall reaction. The Covert Tank has a stronger weight block but the Pitch Black has a duller finish out of the box so they will have a similar overall hook potential.

Question:
I’m switching to 2 hands and my speed is around 15.5 mph, is this a good ball for me?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
Typically 2 handed release bowlers have a higher rev rate and since your ball speed is pretty average you may be a rev dominant bowler. In this case you want a ball that gets pretty decent length before it reacts so the ball does not hook too strong too early. This Pitch Black is not designed to have a lot of hook so that could help you to use this on lighter conditions but you may have to adjust for this ball wanting to grip a little earlier on the lanes.

Question:
I hook the balls a lot would this be i good suggestion for me
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
If most reactive performance balls are too aggressive for your style you may want to look at a urethane ball as an option. They will not have as strong of a hook potential. This ball has a duller finish so if you have a high rev rate you may also need good speed to use this out of the box so it does not react too much too early. If you have a slower ball speed you may have to adjust the cover to something a little smoother to get more length.

Question:
How does this ball compare to the hammer black widow gold?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
They would be extremely different. This ball has a dull finish and a urethane cover so it will read early on the lane with a smooth hook but it has a very mild hook potential and works in lighter oil conditions. The Hammer Black Widow Gold was pearl reactive cover and a polished finish to go long on the lanes and it will have a very strong sharp backend hook and works in medium to heavy oil conditions.

Question:
Using Galaxy 300 now, that's I've used for 34 years, works pitch black have similar hooking?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
I do not have much information on the Galaxy 300 unfortunately but if the ball was from 30 years ago then it would likely be a urethane or rubber ball and would most align with the reaction that a Pitch Black or current urethane ball would have. The reactive coverstock balls would react much different so your best option would probably be the Pitch Black.

Question:
How does this ball compare to the Storm Boo-Yah?
Have an answer to this question?

This is very similar to the 900Global Boo-Yah. They were both solid urethane coverstocks with a 1000 grit finish. The weight blocks were very similar in strength also so they would be very comparable.

Question:
How does this ball compare to the Mix?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
The Pitch Black will have a slightly stronger urethane cover than the Mix and also the the Pitch will have a performance weight block while the Mix has more of a spare ball type of weight block that does not give as much hook potential.

Question:
I currently have the Trend as my main hooking strike ball. Will the Pitch Black be a good fit for when the lanes dry up? I want something that will hook more than a spare ball.
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
There would be quite a jump in hook potential from the Trend down to the Pitch Black but the Pitch Black is a very popular light oil ball. The Urethane coverstock will give you a very smooth controllable hook on lighter oil conditions and it will be stronger than a spare ball or the mix ball. If you wanted something more similar to the way your Trend reacts but for lighter oil you could also try the Electrify Pearl or even one of the Storm Tropical Breeze bowling balls. They have similar length to the Trend to give you that sharper backend hook where the Pitch reads earlier in the midlane for a smoother arcing hook.

Question:
Looking for a hooking urethane ball
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
This ball will have hook potential. Urethanes are usually less hook potential than a reactive ball but this ball would have hook potential in lighter oil conditions.

Question:
I am a thumbless bowler with medium-high revs and a ball speed with of 17mph. I am looking for a ball that I can throw right next to the right gutter as a righty and hit the 1-2 pocket. I also only bowl on house shots. Would this ball be good for that or any other suggestions?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
This ball does not have a high hook potential so it could let you play a slightly straighter shot but the finish out of the box is designed to have this ball start hooking in the mid lane so that it has a smooth arcing hook. So if you have a higher rev rate and it tries to start hooking earlier it may be hard to play this down and in. You may have to adjust the cover some to a slightly smoother finish so it does not hook too early on you.

Question:
Can this ball be used for a strike ball
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
Yes, this bowling ball is designed to work well in lighter to drier conditions and the urethane bowling balls will have a smooth hook that is very easy to read and predictable.
0 of 0 customers found this answer helpful. Did you find this answer helpful? Yes | No Thanks for your feedback!
Answer:
This ball is a great strike ball. It hits like a truck in the pocket. This ball does hook especially if you got the revs. I think this ball will work on medium and high oil conditions depending on rev rate and ball speed.

Just bought and used Pitch black. More hook that I wanted, question is will hook reduce with more use, as oils gets into it?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
Naturally the ball will loose some of the hook potential over time but a quicker solution may be to adjust the finish. Out of the box this ball has a very dull 1000 grit finish. You could try adding polish to this or try sending the finish up to something more like 4000 grit to give the ball a little more length and it will also take away some of the overall grip of the ball.
